Here in Durham, North Carolina we are known for quite a few different things. We have some awesome restaurants, a well-known college with a great athletics program, and baseball. The Durham Bulls baseball team may not be a Major League Baseball team, but it is full of major league talent that is for sure. What is better than a trip out to the ballpark to see America’s favorite pastime in action? Yeah, we think it is one of the most exciting things to do too.

I fyou are a Durham Bulls fan, then you know we love to share with you and all of our other fans through Facebook, Twitter and more. The Durham Bulls team is not the only one that does this though. The majority of MLB teams do the same thing. Players also take advantage of social media to keep their fans in the loop and up to date with all that is going on. Take a look to see what I am talking about below.

Everyone tends to think his or her own city has the best sports fans on the planet. If you’re from Charlotte, NC, then you pretty much hang at the Panthers home games in Bank of America Stadium making all the racket you can while cheering on Cam Newton to greater feats of athletic superstardom — but are you as loud and proud as fans of the Dallas Cowboys, the Washington Redskins, or the New York Giants? Which cities around the US are famous for having the craziest and most zealous fans? Well, down in Florida I’m sure the people of Miami think it’s them. And guess what? According to some information we came by this morning, they are right.

A few of America’s cities can proudly boast the greatest and most enthusiastic sports fans in the nation. Miami is one of those top cities, where fans rally around the Marlins, Dolphins, Panthers, and the Heat. Charlotte didn’t quite rank, but your city may have. To check this, look at the infographic below. You might be surprised at some of the assertions it makes, or maybe not. After all, the classic rivalries are all represented.

Food might not be the first thing that comes to your mind when you think about baseball or baseball stadiums, but it’s surely got to be on the top of your list. You seriously cannot tell me that you would go to a ball park and not enjoy some of the delicious food offerings available to you. Now baseball at the Durham Bull Athletic Park might currently be in hiatus, but you can still stop by the stadium and try out some of North Carolina’s favorite dishes.

The Tobacco Road Sports Cafe in the stadium is open throughout the year and offers up an incredible place to watch sports and eat great food. So if you cannot seem to find a place to get tasty food and watch your favorite sports, then you definitely need to check out Tobacco Road Sports Cafe. With options like shrimp and grits, St. Louis ribs, and their surf and surf you will never want to go back to eating plain bar food while watching the big game again. And that was pretty much the goal ofthe owners Alex and Rommie Amra.

Plus, if the Durham Bulls endorse it, it’s got to be good, right?

PETA, the organization notorious for going to sometimes blood curdling extremes to champion the cause of animal rights, has decided to call out the Durham Bulls — but it’s not for the reason you’re probably thinking. No, PETA is not concerned that Durham’s baseball team might be abusing our bovine brothers and sisters around the world by having a bull for its mascot. No, PETA isn’t worried that the stadium is built in the heart of North Carolina pit cooked barbecue country. Instead of looking at all the negatives that could be looked at, PETA has decided to call attention to something it considers to be positive about the Durham Bulls Athletic Park: the fact that it serves vegetarian concessions alongside all those burgers, dogs, and pulled pork sandwiches.

That’s right, on the menu at the Bulls Athletic Park you’ll find out why it made PETA’s list of the Top 10 Vegetarian-Friendly Minor League Ballparks. Thanks to that ranking, no one around here needs to arm their adt security against PETA supporters who might be slightly overzealous. Veggie burgers, veggie hotdogs, sweet potato and black bean burritos, salads, and fresh fruit and berry cups have earned it a big thumbs up. So, what makes eating vegetables and fruit so much better than eating meat? Lots of things, actually, besides just kindness to animals. PETA has produced a great infographic showing why a vegetarian lifestyle is preferable to a carnivorous one. You can see it below:

There’s nothing better than having fun, right? Of course I’m right. When you can have fun and also promote a good cause, that is even better. The Durham Bulls know just how to enjoy themselves while helping others. For instance one of their main focuses this past season was supporting the local police department of Durham with some fun contests with their fans and some members of Durham’s finest. Let’s see what kind of fun the Bulls were up to.

In this competition a Durham Police officer, a fan, and Bulls’ pitcher Rob Delaney compete to see who can get through a bike obstacle course fastest while wearing drunk goggles. All contestants looked a little wobbly through the course but they made it through.

This video shows the fielding and throwing contest between a fan, a police officer, and Russ Canzler. The three have to catch fly balls and throw to see who’s got the best arm. Russ Canzler is pretty funny to watch during the fly balls especially.

The Durham Bulls club knows that the men and women of the Durham Police Department do great things for the city, and it is so nice to see them give back and take some time to help promote the department while having some good fun.

The Durham Athletic Park is up for new management pending the intentions of MiLB to terminate their contract with the ballpark. According to the News Observer:

MiLB, an umbrella organization of minor-league baseball teams, has managed the DAP since it reopened in 2009 after a $5 million renovation. City Manager Tom Bonfield said he had intended to discuss extending the agreement with MiLB, but not until after this winter’s baseball meetings.

“The fact that this was the last year of a three-year agreement was something we were well aware of,” Bonfield said.

The letter did not give MiLB’s reason for terminating the contract. Spokesman Steve Densa said it was due to “the state of the economy.”

“The program opportunities didn’t develop as we had hoped,” Densa said.

Luckily, the MiLB let the DAP know well in advance so that they will be able to find new management before the contract officially ends. This is frustrating news for the Durham Bulls who have experienced a less than stellar season. However, the DAP is optimistic about their ability to find new management to keep the recently renovated park up and running in the future.

Get ready Durham! The Bulls are going to host the 2012 Triple A Championship Game in 2012. This is a big win for Durham. The Championship could impact the city by 2.5 million dollars, and allow them to showcase to the country the amazing renovations the city has seen over the pat few years.

Triple-A Baseball today announced that Durham Bulls Athletic Park will be the host site of the 2012 Triple-A National Championship Game on Tue, Sept. 18, broadcast live on Versus at 7 p.m.

The Triple-A National Championship Game pits the winner of the International League’s Governors’ Cup against the Pacific Coast League Champion in a one-game, winner take all championship. It is the first time a Triple-A Championship Game has been played east of the Mississippi River since the 1983 Triple-A World Series in Louisville, Ky.

“It’s a tremendous honor for Triple-A Baseball to select Durham as the first International League city to host this amazing event,” Durham Bulls general manager, Mike Birling, said, “The revitalization of Downtown Durham is something that needs to be showcased to the entire country, along with the rich baseball tradition here in the Triangle.”

However, the game doesn’t come without potential costs for the city, as well. Contrary to the regular season when your major league partners cover players’ salaries, Triple A baseball is responsible for all costs associated with the event. It is a huge financial commitments by the city, but city officials and spokespeople for the team are confident. Many corporate partners have already committed to the event, which has given the city confidence. Without those corporate partners, the event would not be possible at all.

The Durham Bulls are most excited about bringing some activity and attention to downtown Durham and the Triangle. This is a fantastic opportunity for the city and for the Durham Bulls. Will the Durham Bulls be playing in the championship game? Only time will tell, but we fully expect it to be
